Marble Glamour at the new Savoy Hotel
London’s iconic Savoy hotel has just reopened after 3 years and an extensive £220 million refurbishment. Mega Marble sourced, fabricated and installed the magnificent marble and stonework for this elegant space.
Mega Marble Director Rafi Mimoni notes ‘There was great satisfaction in this job. The designers utilised some beautiful materials to amazing effect’.
The famous Strand Lobby is considered the heart of the hotel. This dramatic area has been renewed to its former glory with a newly laid, intricate floor of black and white marble tiles, with a Nero Marquina border detail. The skill of the Mega Marble stone masons is shown in the 6 white Carrara marble pillars, each one sitting atop a fielded panel base of Nero Marquina, as well as in the intricately fabricated marble architraves and door linings. The grandeur of the Lobby is continued under a 4 metre arch of Carrara marble leading down stairs, with marble paneling in the same material, through to The Upper Thames Lounge.
Construction of the white archway was fixed using specially designed fixings to follow the exact curvature of the underlying brick arch whilst supporting the weight of the stone.
Framing the doorway leading from the Upper Thames Lounge to the cloakroom areas is a stone architrave adorned with a curved feature. This was created out of a solid block of marble that was hollowed out and shaped in order to reduce the fixing weight whilst retaining the natural beauty of the stone.
Mega Marble was involved in all aspects of the stone work at the Savoy, working closely with the Designers in selecting each of the significant blocks and slabs of stone from suppliers in Italy and Spain This included selection of the fabulous Labradorite Madagascar slabs that were used to create the bar top in the Beaufort Bar where the clever lighting now reflects the pearl like translucence emanating from a bed of sea-blue stone.
While the Lobby design remained true to the hotel’s rich history, the building work had to compensate for the odd eccentricities of the original building’s structure. In 1903 the Savoy was extended, but the building was not built to today’s exacting standards of structural accuracy or safety. The Lobby is not straight but twists unevenly resulting in a discrepancy along its length of more than 300ml. To ensure that the black and white marble tiles appear straight from every angle, every stone was individually cut at the Mega Marble factory in Park Royal with the final adjustments carried out by hand on site.
Rafi says he loves the feel of the Savoy “As you step into the Savoy the feeling is akin to the warm welcome you would have experience when visiting a grand English home in the 1920’s”
Mega Marble’s work continues through the Thames Lounge to the famous Riverside Restaurant. The refurbishment is distinctly art deco and Mega Marble installed sparkling walls in Star Galaxy granite and diamond patterned floors in Crema Marfil and Star Galaxy granite.
Mega Marble is proud to produce work of this quality and scale at its factory here in England. ‘People say manufacturing in England is doomed, we are living proof that it is not ! Our factory operates to the highest standards and we have been producing work for some of the most prestigious projects in the UK for over 15 years including Westfield Shopping Centre, Sofitel Hotel Terminal 5, The Langham Hotel, Park Plaza Westminster Bridge, and the Mandarin Oriental Hotel’ says the founding Director of Mega Marble.
Mega Marble’s current projects include work on the Spa, Signature Restaurant and Bassoon Bar at the new Corinthia Hotel, the entrance foyer at One Hyde Park and the new Westfield Shopping Centre in Stratford due to open in 2011 with amazing vistas over the Olympic Park. Mega Marble is also working on a number of high end residential properties.

Which engineered quartz looks like Marble?

Can Engineered quartz look like marble?
While there is no manmade material that looks exactly like marble, there are some that are beautiful in their own right.
There is engineered quartz that is designed to look like Marble. Silestone ‘Bianco Rivers’ and Caesarstone ‘Misty Carrara’ are white with grey streaks which look similar to the grey veining in Carrara marble. As London’s Mega Marble is an approved fabricator of these brands in the UK, their warranties will apply. Both of these quartz companies offer products of extremely high quality and their levels of service are excellent.
As marble is relatively soft and porous it is not generally recommended for kitchen worktops. While marble can be used across a range of internal applications, it is not as resilient as granite and engineered quartz in kitchens
Some people still choose to have marble worktops. If you would still like to choose marble, it is important that you understand how to clean and maintain natural stone.
Engineered quartz on the other hand, is highly suitable for kitchen worktops. It is far more scratch, heat and stain resistant. As quartz stone in non-porous it is impervious to bacteria. Engineered quartz is made from over 90% quartz crystals which are combined with resins and other materials to form surfaces that are incredibly functional and stylish. There are a range of colours and brands available. Please contact us for further advice on your project.
Choosing Quartz Worktops
Quartz worktops can transform kitchens and add glamour and value to your home. There are a wide range of brands and colours available. These are some of the factors to consider when choosing the perfect quartz worktops for your kitchen.
There are quite a few companies that manufacture engineered quartz and supply this to fabricators in slab form. The majority of quartz worktops fabricated by Mega Marble are from COMPAC, Silestone, Caesarstone and DuPont™ Zodiaq®. As Mega Marble is an approved fabricators, the warranties of these companies apply. These limited warranties range from 10 years to a lifetime warranty. With high-end materials such as quartz the workmanship is as important as the material.
We recommend COMPAC, Silestone, Caesarstone , DuPont™ Zodiaq® and Samsung Radianz based on the quality of their products and their excellent levels of support and service. Reputable companies should follow a procedure patented by the Italian company Breton. Avoid fabricators that supply cheaper alternatives that could be problematic down the line
Most people base their decision about which brand to use on the colour they like best.
There is a wide range of colours available. Some quartz surfaces mimic the tones of natural stone like granite and marble, others are bright and consistent in colour. Bear in mind that matt surfaces require additional care and maintenance.
The edge detail of your worktop as well as drainers can add different style elements to your kitchen. You should consider worktops that will complement your existing kitchen, or redefine its style.
Mega Marble is an expert fabricator of quartz worktops. Please get in touch to discuss your project. Our vast technical knowledge and artistic passion make us the ideal partner for your project.
